  Student Grades and Assessments

Students’ course grades and student assessments are sources of data for addressing inquiry questions related to the improvement of student learning. Assessment data can contribute to understanding the alignment of course objectives, instructional approaches, and rubrics for particular types of performance. Student assessment data can be used to compare the effects of different instructional approaches.

There are many forms of assessments including unit tests, semester exams, performances, and portfolios.

Many resources are available for those wanting to know more about various types of student assessments. See Summary of Key Assessment Concepts for more information including references.

Here are a few tips for assessing student learning:

  • Use multiple assessments.
  • Align the assessments with your learning goals.
  • Align the assessment and the purpose of the assessment
  • Assess the learning context and instructional features as well as student learning.
