Jefferson High School: Admin Support Context

The principal supports NCTA and is interested in expanding opportunities for teachers but she did not explicitly identify Asia as an area of importance. Martine Broussard, the assistant superintendent for the district has been a strong supporter of NCTA and of incorporating Asian studies into the curriculum since taking a study tour to China. She describes this tour for state and district administrators as “an eye opener.” Although Martine intends to retire soon , she expects her successor will support Asian studies too.

Martine Broussard supports change that brings administrators and teachers together. She comments, “Change won’t happen if it’s only top down – it needs to be bottom up. That’s how units will get taught.” Martine thinks it’s important for teachers to take ownership of changes in their teaching. “We are victims of our own educational experiences and to change student perceptions it is vital to first open up teachers’ eyes.” Martine suggests taking a theme, such as Asia, and studying it for a few years. She calls it, “Model Professional Development,” whereby you examine an area in great depth.
