Jefferson High School: Community Context

Oakwood City is a middle class neighborhood made up of predominantly business and professional people. One parent says, “Oakwood is a school-centered community. You don’t move here for the housing, you move here because you believe in the schools.” With the strong support of community residents, Oakwood competes fiercely with neighboring districts in the arena of academic achievement. About 84 percent of the residents are white, but the county’s population of Asians and Hispanics is growing rapidly.
