Cross Case Features: Context

Clemens Middle School: Admin Support Context

Middle school Principal Charles Wright is not actively involved in promoting Asia in the curriculum, but heseems open to the idea as long as teachers are interested and able to meet other school improvement goals. He says, “We are primarily looking for ways to improve our scores [on state assessment tests]. Unless things change in the next few years, we are not going to spend a lot of time actively trying to promote new integration of curricular matters unless it has a practical application. You can find ways to make that happen.”

The superintendent says that teachers need to teach the core curriculum, focusing on the goals of literacy and of writing across the curriculum. Within that core curriculum focus, however, teachers have discretion in the breadth of coverage on a topic and how they approach it. If they so choose, they can use Asia to teach basics.
